THE ROLE OF A MUNICIPAL COUNCILLOR is to represent the public and to consider the well-being and interests of the municipality. Councillors should in my opinion also ensure the accountability and transparency of the operations of the municipality, including the activities of employees and directors. This is also vital in order to maintain the financial integrity of the municipality.
Councillors and the mayor’s objectives should be to ensure that the municipality’s financial and administrative resources are being used as efficiently as possible and supported by the community.
A district councillor should also work closely with citizens in their own district to support and report back issues and needs of the citizens to council and offer recommendations. LIVING IN SAINT-LAZARE FOR OVER 20 YEARS, BEING CLOSELY INVOLVED WITH MY COMMUNITY AND ATTENDING TOWN MEETINGS, I FULLY UNDERSTAND THE ISSUES OF DISTRICT ONE AND THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY!
Decisions are made by council as a whole and not by one individual. So, although a councillor may have fantastic ideas on paper, if it’s not supported by the majority, it will be impossible to implement. This is why we need to focus on what the majority of the population want and need so that we can move forward and serve the best interest of the majority. Having a council with similar values will make the process more efficient.
Citizens should definitely have a say in the direction their town should take and where their tax dollars go and IT SHOULD NEVER BE THE ADMINISTRATION’S/COUNCILLOR’S/MAYOR’S OWN PERSONAL PET PROJECTS THAT TAKE PRIORITY OVER THE NEEDS AND WANTS OF THE MAJORITY OF THE COMMUNITY.
Many of the decisions will have long-term consequences for our town that will extend beyond our 4 year term. Please VOTE for the best candidates that understand the issues and needs of the citizens and will work for the long-term health and welfare of our entire community.
